Well it finally happened. There we were sitting at the table enjoying breakfast, when all of the sudden he pulled into our driveway. There was no mistaking who or what he was or why he was here. I don't know if I was more surprised at the big blue wrecker truck sitting in my driveway or at my lack of hysterical reaction upon his arrival. My husband and I both looked at each other like, oh well, here we go. I nudged him to go and speak to the man and upon deciding I didn't want a second hand report of the horrible scene I was about to witness I followed him outside.
The man didn't look like your typical repo man, I don't know about you, but in my minds eye, I imagine some big burly guy that looks like he hasn't had a bath in days and maybe even missing a few teeth. After all, as a kid I don't recall any of my friends sitting around with stars in their eyes as they dreamed of the day they could become the "repo man".
He was very clean, as was his truck, much to my surprise, and polite (who would have thought). He even shook our hands as he introduced himself and, he had all his teeth! Then, after explaining why he was here, as if we didn't know, we briefly shared our dilema, probably more out of trying to spare some measure of dignity as it is a little different when you're self employed, (not really). He explained that he wasn't like most repo guys, to which I agreed, although I can't remember the last time I had to deal with one to be honest. Anyway, he gave us some instructions and said he wasn't going to take the car. (grace) He actually seemed to genuinly care about why we would be in such a state that would call for his services. He also told us that he had received our paperwork to pick up the car seven days earlier. (grace) It so happened my husband had just come in the night before from working out of town, he wasn't suppose to be back for another day. (even more grace, for me) He gave us his card and said to call him if we needed anything, then before leaving, he turned around and blessed us! Can you imagine, being blessed by a repo man? I know you can't hardly imagine that even being worth mentioning, and I would feel the same, except his reaction to my reply let us know that he wasn't just any repo man, he was the Christian repo man God chose to let us know He is with us.
I came back inside as tears came to my eyes being more overcome by what God did for us than I was by the fact that a repo man had just left my house, albeit without my car, thank you God.
I am reminded of the story in Judges 6 about Gideon who was threshing wheat in a winepress in order to hide it from the Midianites. An angel appears to him and tells him, "the Lord is with you, mighty warrior". But Gideon answers, "if the Lord is with us, then why has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about"? I think sometimes we are so focused on what we think the miracle should be, that we miss the ones God is actually doing.
How often do we think that if God was really with us then we wouldn't be experiencing the circumstances we are in? I could have focused on the negative circumstances that brought about the repo man to begin with, or I could choose to focus on the fact that God, in His love and mercy, hand picked which repo man came to our house. You see, the same God that chose which man came to our house, is also the same God that can change the situation we are in, but for whatever reason that at present we do not understand, chooses not to. We have to have eyes to see God where He is and chooses to be, otherwise we'll keep missing Him.
