• Let This Mind Be In You

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a servant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.  Phillipians 2: 5-8 (Emphasis mine).

Part of having the nature and character of Christ is seeing our selves as God does. Notice that Jesus did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, which tells us He knew who He was.  Our image of our self has as much to do with having Jesus’ nature and character as humility and meekness. In fact I would dare say that without the correct perception of ourselves I don’t know that we can really walk in true humility. I believe based on the whole of scripture a lot of what has been taught on this subject is incomplete. A spirit of religion has portrayed humility as something that it is not and actually is rooted in pride.

We have been taught that being like Jesus in humility when referenced to the passage above is all about dying to self and crucifying our flesh and while this is true, it is only partly true. It is also about doing these in light of the revelation of what God created us to be in the first place. When our identity is still tied to the wounds of our past we embrace this berating of ourselves (when our behavior doesn’t measure up to our standard of righteousness) as humility. I don’t find that to be the picture portrayed in scripture of Jesus’ image of Himself. He knew who He was as much as He knew what He came to do. The fact that He did what He did in full knowledge of who He was is what shows the true nature of humility rather than some contrived religious facade.
